Optical Networks
Internship
Info
The Optical Networks Internship introduces students to the fundamentals of optical networks used for information transmission. The programme covers optical network principles, active network elements, network architectures, measurement equipment, device configuration, and practical testing in a laboratory environment.
During the internship, students explore how optical systems are built, how information is transmitted through optical infrastructure, and how such networks are measured, configured, and tested in practice.

What Will Students Work On ?
Students work with the basic concepts and components of optical networks for information transmission. The internship introduces the main active elements used in optical networks, different network architectures, and the measurement tools used to analyze optical signals and verify network performance.
The practical part of the programme takes place in Smartcom’s laboratory, where students build a simplified optical transmission system, use optical measurement devices, configure equipment, and test the completed setup.
Conditions
The Programme Includes:
Introduction to Optical Networks
Active Network Elements
Network Architectures
Optical Measurement Equipment
Individual Consultant
The Optical Networks Internship combines theoretical background with practical laboratory work. Students learn how optical networks are structured, what active elements are used in information transmission, and how network architectures have evolved over time.
The main practical task is to build a simplified information transmission system in Smartcom’s laboratory, configure the devices, use optical measurement equipment, and test the completed optical network.
What You Will Learn
During the Optical Networks Internship, students learn how information is transmitted through optical networks and what makes optical technologies important for modern communication infrastructure.
The programme helps students understand the role of active optical network elements, the evolution of network architectures, and the purpose of measurement tools used in optical systems. Students also gain practical experience with device configuration, optical signal measurement, laboratory testing, and basic troubleshooting of an optical transmission setup.

Practical Lab Session
The Optical Networks Internship includes a practical laboratory session where students build and test a simplified optical transmission system. This hands-on part gives students the opportunity to work with real optical equipment, use measurement tools, configure devices, and observe how an optical network behaves in practice.
